Interview: George Gonzalez of George the Salon

Couple weeks ago I got to sit down and interview George Gonzalez of George The Salon while he is in town for The President Cup as the hair stylist for the golfers and their wives. As the director of George The Salon in Chicago, George (who is so humble) has worked with Harpo Studio (yeap, the perks of that was rewarded with cruise holiday with Oprah) and has been in the hair dressing business for years.

Having opted to attend beauty school instead of your regular university, George knew from the very beginning being in the beauty industry was exactly what he wanted to do. Nothing means more important than following the gut feeling of doing something and feeling right about it and being able to envision success.

What is the current hair trends?

Balayage is still going strong as it is a natural look and they are so versatile with the colours you can play around with. Long hair is a simple look and will always be in trend (I totally agree with this). Reds and Rich Browns are the colours in season.

Three simple tips woman should do to keep hair easily managable

  1. Make sure your hair is in good condition to begin with. George recommends Pureology (available in Australia) and Davines (Italian) hair care brand.
  2. Always use a spray protector prior to heat styling.
  3. Have regular hair cuts (roughly once every 3 months)

On favourite hair products
Davines Finishing Cream (comes in a pink tube)
Sebastian Hair Mousse (If you haven’t jump on the mousse bandwagon, use it on freshly washed damp hair for volume and lift)

Pet hate on hair
Being a perfectionist, it would be everything from cut, colour to the styling. Hair cut has to be functional in order for the style to look great. George is big on functional hair cut and colour.

On how to pick a great hairdresser
Don’t be afraid to drop into salons and ask for consultations. Pay extra attention to a hairdresser who listens. Test them and keep talking to them to see if they believe in what you believe and ultimately able to answer your needs. George emphasised that you need to find a hairdresser that is patient who wouldn’t rush you out the door. Build a relationship with the hairdresser that you like to let the person understand you more.

Tips on helping hair growth
Depends on the layers, get rid of them if they are overtly done (which can be very common).

Tips for straight, flat, fine hair (this was more of a question I had to ask for myself)
Accept the type of hair that you have and work with it. Add different layers and bangs to add dimension to hair.
