It’s been a long time coming for this post to finally be written. People often find it amusing when they find out that I have a blog and 10 out of 10 times the stupid questions that follows is often unbearable and I always end up finding myself explaining why. Here are some of the classics that I shall stamp this post URL to the next person’s forehead when they ask me these questions.
- So how many uniques do you have? Often in front of a whole table, strangers, people who I couldn’t care less. Awkward would be an understatement. You don’t find me asking “Oh, so you’re an accountant, how much do you make? do I. Uniques to a blogger is the same as pay to a normal person. You just don’t ask the person you’ve just met that question. EVER.
- So why don’t you go full time? Hello, we are in Australia – an island here. Take a step back and stop comparing the success models in USA/UK etc, it can never be replicated in terms of numbers (hits), business budget and hell we’re often seasons behind the rest of the world. Especially in the field of beauty blogging, put simply it is just too niche of a market.
- So why don’t you sell your blog? Insert deadpan face, it’s a blog not a website. Besides do you know what is the definition of a blog?
- So why don’t you sell your beauty products? Oh, the times I am tempted to say why don’t you sell your used underwear?
- How do you manage to blog? Refrain from rolling eyes, I will myself in front of the computer and type on the keyboard. Doh!
- I should start a blog too and get sent free products, hmn.. what should I blog about? Here’s one for you, blog about your ignorance, I am sure people would very much enjoy reading all about it.
- You must enjoy all the free stuff. NO! Nothing comes freely, it is an unspoken agreement to provide some sort of feedback to the brand whether if I enjoy the product or not or if I am going to consider blogging about it or not. It is a business to brand and everything should be treated professionally.
Are you a blogger?
Do you encounter these annoying questions too?

HAHAHAHAHAHA spot on! A lot of people think we do this for the free stuff. What they don’t know is the obligation and pressure that comes with those “free stuff”. While I’m grateful for them (they help with content generation, but happy to say they’re not the only content), I’m happier blogging about my own shit
Re. that full time thing, unless you have other sources of income, blogging alone is not enough. Not for beauty bloggers anyway. I have yet to know of a beauty blogger in Australia who does blogging alone full time (usually there are ebooks, seminars, freelancing, consultation etc on the side). Not a sustainable business on its own.
PS: Sell your used undies. HAH!
OH, the things I could say to those people. The list is endless.
I know the intention isn’t bad but not everyone starts a blog for freebies or have the goal to sell it. People just can’t see the bigger picture.
In which case, I prefer those who don’t know what to say to shut their mouth!!
I get asked “How many followers?” a fair bit. Followers of what, exactly? On my RSS feed, FB, Twitter, BlogLovin’, Pinterest? I never know what to say, or why anyone but me would even care.
On the flip side, I sometimes get really good questions when people find out I blog. A lot of friends take me with them when shopping for beauty products now, which I love.
I don’t like the money questions either. I love that other people make money from blogging but WHY is that the first thing people think of now?
Too true Peta, I get asked that far too often too especially from strangers. Such high school mentality, it’s like meeting someone you’ve just met and ask “How many facebook friends do you have?” WTF?
I tend not to tell my friends that I blog. Secret hobby. http://www.facebook.com/beautychattette
Omg LOL “I should start a blog too and get sent free products, hmn.. what should I blog about? “. …….. Too. Damn. True. Seriously…
I’ve actually met a few new friends yesterday and my blog came up into the topic. I’m glad the guy (a boy too!!) asked none of those questions you stated.. He asked, “So what do you blog about? What ‘beauty’ cover? Make-up? Skin?”
So surprisingly sensible, right?
