This time around, I’m back to talk about social gatherings and etiquettes. You see, being a beauty blogger I often find myself in many launches and events. I used to be that awkward person in social events hating every single moment of it, feeling all self conscious, avoiding eye contact and all. Then one day came along and I pretty much snapped out of that mentality, I told myself I could either be pathetic and keep using the same excuse of being shy, don’t know what I can say or I could actually put in some effort and make something out of it.

So I started by smiling, a simple yet such a strong move. I smiled at myself, to people I didn’t know (surprise, surprise so many people smile back!), maintained eye contact and forced myself out of my comfort zone. Then before I realise it, everything else came into place. The conversations, the small talks, the social bit of it all fell into place.

I guess the moral of the story is that you have to be and feel comfortable about yourself in order for others to feel the same way about you and warm up to you. Until you make that decision about yourself and step out of the comfort zone, you will always be that awkward person in the social setting that people will find it so easy to avoid and forget.

  1. I agree, a smile goes a very long way. I still haven’t quite mastered the art of randomly going to strangers at social events and introducing myself, but I’ve noticed that by smiling, it draws people to you, which makes it just that bit easier to get a conversation going.

Another important social etiquette (for me, at least) is to watch the person’s body language when it comes to saying goodbye. In Malaysia, it’s not common for acquaintances to hug or even air-kiss each other when saying goodbye, but it is in Australia. I’m glad that with our diverse cultures in Australia, the locals now understand if other more conservative cultures are not into such physical contact. Personally, I like hugging and kissing goodbyes but it’s best to watch the other person closely if he/she is into it or not. Don’t want to commit a social faux pas!

  2. Being polite, having manners and respect for everyone :)

  3. I always in the same situation as you and I really not liking to social around. I started to change a little bit. In order to social around and meet new people, the most important is being confidence and comfortable with who you are. Though I still have lots to work out to breakthrough my shyness and poor in engaging the conversation with people. at least I’m trying instead of avoiding it.

  4. Being polite and not checking your phone every other minute while in a conversation. It’s so rude!

  5. being social and outgoing i am always the one to make everyone laugh it always makes environment comfortable and fun. so everyone can go home in a happy mood

  6. Not using a mobile phone – browsing, texting, it doesn’t matter – while having a conversation. I just stop mid sentence now to see how long till they realise! ;)

  7. Being polite and allowing everyone to join in the conversation. A few manners go a long way. Also I think it’s really nice to bring a present for the host – it doesn’t have to be expensive, just thoughtful.

  8. Pleases and thank yous are sadly not as common as they should be – and they were one of the first things I learned as a little kid! I also appreciate (and practice) holding doors open, I think it’s a very small thing that can put a smile on someone’s face.
