Eats: Kenji Japanese Dining

We love our Japanese food and has been actively trialling new ones from time to time. Recently we discovered Kenji Japanese Dining in Camberwell offering authentic sushi experience. Kenji imports their fish from Hokkaido and the staffs are all Japanese.

We got ourselves a seat at the sushi bar. Love the gourmet options.

The crumbed fried prawns $5 are as fresh as you can possibly get them in.

Gourmet Dragon Roll $13.80 – the avocado is no doubt one of the freshest I have tasted on a dragon roll and let me tell you seeing the unagi being torched in front of you and then roll into a dragon roll has to be a one-of-a-kind of culinary experience.

Gourmet Soft Shell Crab Roll $8.80  – Crunchy and the spicy mayo sauce within is sure to satisfy any soft shell crab cravings.

Nigiri – Hokkaido Scallop $6 (best scallop nigiri to date) & Surf Clam $4.

Both of which are fresh and doesn’t come with any trace of fishy scent.

Gourmet Sashimi Main Platter$28 – Fresh, delicious and definitely a must try.

Overall, I highly recommend Kenji for authentic Japanese dining experience. I’ve heard great things with their bento box and rice dishes too. Can’t wait to order a sushi platter to try next.

Eats: Yamato

Previously, we’ve had pretty good food experience at Yamato; so when I was served this quarter filled bowl of miso soup I was rather shocked. I am guessing there’s been a change of hand in business as the waitress had to come back THREE times to confirm our order. This is beyond acceptable.

This was my sushi that came with my dinner box. Needless to say, a picture says a thousand words, the cut, quality and portion of these dishes are not worth the price tag that comes with it anymore.

This was my dinner box served with ice cream. By the time I had done with my food, the ice cream was already melted into a gooey mess. Overall, the whole experience was average at best. We were sorely disappointed with the dishes this time around and no doubt won’t be returning to this establishment anytime soon.

Eats: three bags full

What’s better to start your breakfast with a tall glass of fresh juice? I had the Pineapple, strawberry, apply & mint juice that was very refreshing and citrus-y. $6

I picked the house cured salmon $15.50. The salmon was a delicious and paired absolutely well with the avocado, rocket and dill sour cream. The pea, feta & corn fritter was crunchy and very generous, it was to a point I couldn’t finish it.

Le garçon had poached eggs on organic toast with added spinach. $12
He said it was pretty decent and average to which I responded you picked the most basic stuff, how can they stand out?

Carrot cake cupcake $4

I find the cake a little too moist and the icing was still a little ‘wet’. Perhaps it was not properly ventilated prior to plating it up for display? Taste wise the carrot cake was pretty good.

Overall, we quite like this place for a relaxed weekend breakie. Do keep in mind if you’re coming in a larger group, do get in early to avoid for the long queue.

Eats: Post Deng Cafe

This restaurant (even though they call themselves a cafe) offers free prawn crackers on arrival to nibble on while you wait for your dish to arrive. The service is friendly and is very quick.

Prawns cooked in Yu Hiong Style, definitely one of our favourite cooking style for seafood. It’s bit spicy, bit sweet and deep fried with batter.

Shanghai Dumpling Xiao Long Bao.
Might not be the best I have tried but definitely one of the better ones in town.

Braised Pork. It was tender and really juicy. The way braised pork should be not dry and stringy from so many restaurants I have tasted recently (yes, I’m talking about you Hu Tong, shame on you).

For dessert, we had deep fried ice cream. This was more of a disappointing treat because the crust outside was not batter, it was made of biscuit and it was a little too sweet to go with the already sweet vanilla ice cream in the inside. Overall, we quite like our experience with Post Deng Cafe, we’ve been there a couple of times and their peking duck is quite a good dish too.

Eats: Ishiya Stonegrill

This sushi and sashimi plate came with the lobster and fish fillet set I picked. The sashimi is relatively fresh but the cut was rather tiny as you can see in the picture above.

This was my lobster and fish fillet with a slice of tofu, a piece of cucumber and half a slice of mushroom.

I find the lobster and fish cooked way too quick on the stone than I can possibly eat them and I ended up with rather chewy fish in the end. Due to the stonegrill being hot on its own, it was impossible to adjust the heat. I wasn’t given a plate to move my food to either. Definitely not a child friendly restaurant.

These were the sauce that they came with. I find them really bland and nothing was  a stand out for me, what a shame.

This came with le garçon’s wagyu beef dish.
It comes in a slightly more generous serving than my set but the sashimi cuts are still just as tiny.
Possibly the tiniest I’ve seen from a restaurant in Melbourne in fact.

Le garçon’s wagyu beef set. The set also came with a very fragrant garlicky rice that I didn’t get to take a picture of. We were told that the beef was classed at No 8 marbling and I think the waitress was lying because it did not taste like a beef that was anywhere near a 7 and that’s the maximum standard grading?

We also ordered some deep fried chicken to our disappointment it was not hot in the inside and it was very average. Overall, the value for the food was borderline acceptable and the food quality was a rather lack lustre. Doubt we will ever return.
